Students will learn how to debate in this middle school debating lesson! I created this resource because, well, teenagers are opinionated. I figured that we might as well try our best to channel their energy into insightful, meaningful debates! This resource is the perfect introductory lesson to debating. Ideal for in-class instruction, my debating resource will help your students practice their writing and verbal communication at a respectful, professional level. 

 

How to use this resource

 

Ideally, this teaching resource should be executed with middle or high school students. It's perfect for grades 7-10, in my opinion. It is not a problematic resource to implement, with little to no prep. Still, it does require their full attention, and you should use the informational videos provided to clarify any questions your students may have. 

 

While researching, your students will demonstrate their literacy skills and formulate how to argue talking points. It includes:

 

Debate reading comprehension

 

This resource includes various reading comprehension activities that focus on debates and help students understand the structure and purpose of debates. These activities may consist of information on different types of debates, strategies for arguing effectively, and resources for finding evidence to support their arguments.

 

Teacher notes on debate implementation.

 

This resource includes teacher notes that guide the implementation of the resource in the classroom. The notes may include suggested debate topics, ideas for incorporating the resource into lesson plans, and strategies for helping students prepare for a debate.

 

Debate PowerPoint lesson

 

This resource includes a PowerPoint lesson that teachers can use to introduce debating skills to their students. The lesson may consist of slides with information on the structure of a debate, strategies for arguing effectively, and tips for researching and organizing arguments.

 

Debate anchor chart

 

This resource includes an anchor chart that teaches students about poise and how to maintain it during a debate. The chart may include tips and strategies for staying calm and focused under pressure and examples of poise in action.

 

Debate listening assessment

 

This resource includes a listening assessment that teachers can use to evaluate students' listening skills when attending a debate. The evaluation may consist of questions about the arguments presented, the evidence used, and the overall effectiveness of the discussion.

 

Debate graphic organizers

 

This resource includes graphic organizers that students can use to research and organize their arguments for a debate. These organizers may consist of worksheets, charts, and other visual aids that help students brainstorm ideas, gather evidence, and structure their arguments clearly and logically.

 

Debate rubric and teacher comment section

 

This resource includes a rubric that teachers can use to evaluate their student's performance during a debate. The rubric may have argumentation skills, research and evidence, organization, and delivery criteria.
